Garmin Edge 705 - Teil 2

Bump:

I'm looking for a 705 but I know next to nothing about Edges, is the 705 worth it or too complicated for a first-time bike GPS user and should I go for a cheaper model first?

I would say the Edge 705 is too old now and therefore very slow with latest maps. You should look for a Edge 800/810 or maybe Edge 1000.

Form a user point of view the Garmin Edge series isn't very complicated to use. Problems are often caused by a immature firmware. So if you buy a Garmin product that has just appeared on the market you need some firmware updates until most of them are sorted out.

Too old huh... shame the 800 is expensive as hell! Could get a 705 for 95 including shipping from DE > NL but yeah, considering you're saying it's slow I might save up for the 800 or 810 then.

What's the difference between the 800, 810 and 1000 models btw?

The Edge 705 was introduced early 2007. So it is about 9 years old. The Edge 800, 810 and 1000 are the successors. The latest Model is the Edge 1000 that was introduced in spring 2014. The two other models somewhere in between. Major difference between Edge 705 and the others is the touchscreen. The Edge 705 was operated by a joystick and the Edge 800/810 by a resistive and the Edge 1000 by a capacitive touchscreen. The Edge 800 and 810 are quite similar with the 810 adding active routing and some online features. The Edge 1000 adds some more.

Below the spec of the models

Edge 1000: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/into-sports/cycling/edge-1000/prod134491.html

I bought the Edge 705 in 2007 and the Edge 1000 in 2015. The Edge 705 is still working but very slow when scrolling in maps or when using active navigation with recalculation of the track. It still runs 13 h with one charge. With the Edge 1000 everything is much smoother but even if most of the features are switched off is only runs about 9 h on one charge. So on longer tours it is wise to have an external charger on hand.

The Edge 500 and also the Edge 510 do not offer active routing as they are lacking the possibility to install maps. But both are capable to load track that you can follow. Nevertheless you will only see a line representing the course you loaded. I use beside the Edge 705 and Edge 1000 also an Edge 500. But it is only used when commuting to work.

Ich bestätige mich hier mal als Totengräber. 😁
