That little bit of variance is normal and expected. This is true for any linkage system consisting of multiple pivot point with bearings, as a tiny shift in each point can be magnified and seem like a lot by the time it is out to the end of the lever, which in this case is the shock mount. It takes the full system to be bolted in tight for the system to become fully aligned, and in this scenario, bolting in the shock is the last piece of the puzzle. So though I would agree with you that you don’t want side loading on the damper/shock, this won’t be an issue as when the shock is in place, and the suspension is cycled through the travel with the full system bolted tight, the alignment will be corrected.
We do get this question often, and side loading of shocks is not an issue experienced with this design, as tested over many years of frames on the market. Not saying this to brag Just want to make sure you feel good about your new bike!
Thanks for reaching out, and enjoy your new ride!
