Hi

Which one of these two brakes would you recommend for XC-riding and why?
Hayes HFX 9 or
Shimano XT disc

I seem to recall reading about problems with the XT discs - they "scream" and the pads doesn't last long, is this correct?

Please feel free to reply in German!

Cheers,

Jesper

I don't really know.
Both of them have pros an cons.
The XT Disk is only available with the Shimano dual Controll Levers.
I don't like these levers for freeriding, but for XC they are OK, I think.
The power is not that enormous, but enough for XC.
I don't have the "scream" problem when it's dry, only when its wet outside.
The pads are not the best ones, but if you don't brake without any pause, this doesn't matter.
The Hfx 9 (I haven't already testet) has the "on-off" principle, as many people say, which means either it stops hard or not at all.
It's hard to dose the power.
The power all in all is better than the XT-Brake, as I heard, but as I told you, I haven't already tested.

If you are a seasoned (disk brake) rider, I would recommend you the HFX brake, If not, I would take the XT, but you must like the system.

All in all, I wouldn't take any of those personally.
Tip: The K18 or K24 Formula Brake. I love the design and the power is enormous, but also a bit hard to dose.

So long,
Maddin

PS: I'm only a pupil, so please excuse my language mistakes, if I did some, but I liked you asking here.
Don't you have MTB forums there in Denmark or where you come from?
It might be easier for you to get lots of different answers and more experience with the Brakes.

Have the HFX9 (180/160 combo) on my own bike and test drove the 160mm XT. The small XT disk lacks power, even when cold.

The Hayes overall delivers impressive power, but has rather digital characteristics. Not quite "on/off", but close to it, or in other words and unlike with the XT, applied braking power is dependent on power applied to the lever rather than travel.

Most significant downside of the Hayes I experienced so far is that it starts "screaming" when wet.

Let's put it this way, the Hayes is certainly not the best disc brake available on the market, but I'd certainly rank it above the XT and also the slightly less expensive magura julie.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Took a Trek 8000 with LX Dual Control levers for a short spin yesterday - I must say that the DC levers worked surprising well thou they will take some getting used to (only tried the bike on the streets thou so have no idea about how they handles on the trails....). But still - I prefer Rapid Fire and as the Hayes seems to be better than the Shimanos I'll go for the Hayes then.

@Maddin
Sure we have mtb-forums here in Denmark but none as big and lively as this one. Remember, Denmark is a small country with only app. 5 mio. inhabitants and unfortunately not all of them are into mtb :)
By the way - my english isn't perfect either so don't worry :daumen:

alle the screws of my 2004 hayes nine are bullshit ... you have to be very carefully with the tourque ... the whole thing is build up in very cheap quality ..

break power is in my opinion with 160/160 not better as with the XT ...

i never would buy the hayes again
