Question: are the VII OEM units based on a completely different axle or are they modular and interchangeable?

Sorry, but your stuck with this axle. The two integrated torque arm versions of the hub are not interchangeable without disassembling the hub completely AND having the appropriate part at hand.
These have therefor been OE hubs, AM hubs haven't been sold in that spec except for special order.
