The range of motion of crunches is way too small to be effective. Crunches do not really mimic any functional movement of the body and only the very top part of the rectus abdominus is activated.
Klimmzuge or pull-ups (weighted as well, i.e. with additional weight) and Heavy pulldowns , on the other hand, allow for a full stretch of the abdominal muscles when performed correctly. Heavy pulldowns or pull-ups with a closed-supinated grip will blast the abdominals
Kniebeugen=Squats
Interesting.
I do bodyweight squats and all variations of pull-up/chin-ups(not weighted yet).
For core training I usually do: crunches, chinnies, v-ups, lying hip swings, planks and superman, plus ab wheel rollouts and L-sits.
I always regarded pull-ups/chin-ups as pulling exercises and squats as lower body exercises but never knew that they have an effect on your abs too.
