hi,

first of all (excuse me to write in english but my german is a bit rusty)

so i'm looking for a set of pedals, SPD with plateform to ride in the woods and singletracks.

I'm not a weight weenie all i look for is reliability and solidity.

So here my several options:

  1. Shimano M530 (or XT, XTR i can get a XTR for less than of 40€ if the ad is still on)
  2. Shimano DX M647 (heavy i know but look strong)
  3. Cube RFR Pedals Flat with Click-System (http://www.bike-discount.de/fr/acheter/cube-rfr-pedals-flat-with-click-system-black-234434)
  4. Exustar E-PM820 http://cycling.exustar.com/index.php/tc-pedals/e-pm820-detail.html

So about shimano i don't have any questions about their reliability but i would like your feelings about these choices for All-mountain/enduro with some jumps.

I'm not a great rider but i have chance not to fall often and i'm not a heavy rider (=68kgs).

I have to buy with confidence since i'am jobless at the moment so i want to keep this set as long as possible.

thank you for your answer.

Hi,

hard to say.

In terms of money I would prefer M424 instead of the M647. They look the same an cost half.
Reliability? Good question. I am using my M424 since 3-4 years.

Jumping with SPD is another story. I like to be klicked in. Others don't :)

In terms of platform the Shimanos are not really platform pedals. M530 absolutely not.
On M424/M647 you can stand hardly (for a few seconds) without beeing clicked in.

Cube and Exustar are not double sided. (one side is platform, one side SPD)
Some people like it, some don't
The WELGO D10 is similar but cheaper. Reliability? No idea.

I don't want to say "this or that is $hit!" It depends on you

cheers

If you want to use to plattform when not clipped in I would recommend the M647 or M424.

I would buy the XT Pedal if you say the PD-M530 would be anough as you can service it with normal tools.
On all my Shimano pedals the axle comes loose after a amount of time (depends on usage and pedal) so you need to retighten it.

I think my M647 are the most reliable pedals I ever had. I serviced them for the first time after about 5 years and now they are as good as new (minus the scratches ;) )

I'm not confident with 424/545. i read to many reviews talking about issues with fixation on the axle! the yellow side logo fall and the pedal is K.O!

Many years ago, i rode with SPD and i ahd no problem with jumping ! So that's why i'd like to retry it!

Yes M530 is not a strictly plateform one! but there is a little one around! that's why i put in my choice

My mistake! I was sure the cube and exustar were two side. By the way only one side could be a weakness?

Thank you for your advice and review for the 647!
i must admit it was my first choice but the resin cage bring me some doubts!

You schould definitly take a look at HT pedals (X1, X2, T1, ...)
I'm not really confident with HT components! it looks like Crank Brothers! Really nice looking but weak reliabilty!

I don't understand your doubts about the resin cage. It's very robust the only thing I need to do now is to sand it down a bit because with all those rock hit's the pedals took i start cutting my legs in the lift line ;)

It's not necessarily a weakness, but many times (actually allways) the wrong side is on top :)
I leared to hate this on my M324 and A520 so I scraped them.
But as I mentioned. Some people like it.

Maybe it's a mistake but it's a habit: you prefer to trust a pedal made in metal like titane or aluminium than a resin one!
Maybe i'm wrong! At the beginning i was on the run to get the DX but when i see the cube and exustar in aluminium i have prefered to take a second before any décision.

i undertstand what you mean: the side with spd is always on the bottom and when you want to clip you have to turn the pedal on the right side.
A bit annoying but i can deal with this! my question is more on the strengh of the axle and cage and the long term reliability!

I have seen there are others models of exustar like M825AL, 824 and 823 but to find it in europe is a nightmare

Well the resin is only a bit of platform and to prevent big hits at the main pedal. I think that part in metal and it would weight even more. :D Nevertheless it's really stable it took some big hits on my bike. But if I were to choose pedals for my AM bike and I were on a tight budget I would choose the PD-M530 or the XT ones. The XT ones are nice as you don't need a special tool to open them and service them. Another option would be the HT pedals. I think they are nice but as i got 3 bikes with SPD system and I don't want to change all bikes I will stay with SPD pedals ;)
