What Happends when you mix Bicycles and Motobikes

Thanks for the explanation. That's really interesting. I'm just wondering how the brake performance would be like since the flanks/sides of the disc rims have been varnished/painted. I thought the sides ought to be rough.

"Varnished/painted".....What !?!?

You mean with a coat of a sustance to increase their grip...!?!?

For motorcycles you can find a bunch of different crazy materials
Carbon fibre rotors (take forever the heat up and don't work well when wet) or "Carbon Grown" I don't know how you can explain this, but they add layers upon layers (little by little) of carbon molecules and compress/heat them to make them somehow into a solid material like a ceramic (with out a fabric or a resin) or simpler methods like "Ceramic" and other coating using a aluminum core rotor (kind of like a Mavic ceramic rim)..

All this are crazy expensive (at least 1000euro a piece and they are not safe for everyday usage) and you can justified them do to the excessive speeds achieve at the race track and also because they have less rotational mass making the motorbike more flickable

Anyway Motorcycles use their engine for braking too, well four strokes do (two strokes have very little engine braking, but they are also super light) so you "Drag" the engine or drop down a gear when you need to slow down on a bicycle they wheels keep turning even if you stop spinning the cranks (Un less you are on a fix wheel track bike) and you need the use the brakes also to scrub speed (no just to stop you) and that generates incredible amounts of heat that can render the disc useless (glaze, warp, etc)

I hope it makes sense.
The second stem is great.

Yeap It works really well.

...

No, actually I thougt that your rims aren't made for rim brakes.
I'll show you what I mean:

"normal" rim for rim brakes

The black flanks are the difference. They are (what I called) painted. I just thougt that v-breaks wouldn't work with disc-rims. Got me?

But if your rims are working properly with v-breaks, everything is perfect

Oh yeah, Sorry I assume it was some language mistake.. (mostly mine since my Ingles still sucks)

when i took the pictures the rims were brand one, now the anodizing (not paint) is wear in out a little (less black, more silver) but the brake keep stoping like crazy.

from last weekend ride.

I attribute some of the performance do to the "backwards" way the brakes are mount it on the fork.

Even with this "Smaller" Mavic 121 rims (none ceramic)

I think they "Wedge" into the rim as oppose to try to "open" the brake post like on a conventional fork mount.

No need for a Brake Booster or fancy XTR brakes, they don't even squill or make any noise at all.

In contrast this XTR brakes (same koolstop red brakepads) and a DKG brake booster are not even close in performance, well also the Surly fork is scary flexy compare to the massive FUNN 20mm fork.

Of my JP Morgen Hydrolic suspension stem.

Yes I need to Cut the Steering on the fork, but since I used forks with many stems and even bikes I just don't want too.

JP is a really good friend of mine from San francisco, but even then my two JP stems I got from E bay since he only made a few in the early 90's (1992/1994) and he does not have any anymore.

They are not for sure the "Perfect" suspension system.

But I prefer this Stem than a fork that bounce up and down like a pogo stick, at least on the tandem or a "vintage" bike that was not design for a suspension fork.

Ready to ride.

Respect. That looks very nice. I feel a little bit the spirit of the first Mountainbike days :daumen:

The Bicycle rack or my Bikes...!?!?

I'm for sure a Melancholic man of the good old days.

Yes I have a bunch of Cutiing edge (nicolai's Empella's, M5 S-Work's, etc) but My heart is for sure set on the old machines I grow up around and dreaming about.

Actually the whole bicycle rack is made of mostly recycle bicycle but also windsurf, snowboard and skateboard parts.

Basically I took everything to make the rack out of a trash can, even the plate that makes the platform for the rack was just "Scrap" Aluminum, until I bend it, cut it and drill the many holes by hand.

The first VW Bus. Nice one & in a quite good condition as far as I can see it. Should fit into my Bus. :D
The Beetle is also a nice one but I think my gal would dislike the trunk or hood or whatever. But I'll ask her.

How far do you travel with that construction? Or when is it turning nasty?

Jeff jones is one of the most incredible bicycle frame builders, his bikes are legendary, I'm sure his bus is build in similar ways.

Now, Now if you want to talk about big ass trucks, i have one for you..

My friend Mark was to cheap to buy a proper Unicat (made in Germany) so he is making his own version and I'm helping him from time to time.

here is his Photo Gallery

Taking about "Puritans"

The lady that own this car, airbrush the "Baby passage" on the hood of her car, somebody post a picture on the net, when to the news paper , two days later the department of motor vehicles (the entity that control vehicles here) send her a letter suspending her license plate...

Then the media storm Came, freedom of expression whatever she when to court, win the case but as far as i know the Hood end up on E-bay and sold for a ton of money.

Yes America runs on money, just like the rest of the world but is a little more evident around here..

How far do you travel with that construction? Or when is it turning nasty?

On my Bike..

I'm not that rich so I never have the capital to go "Forever" (like around the world, type rides)

but so far my longest trip loaded with my girlfriend, the bikes and all the equipment was about 11.000kilometers long.

From san francisco to nevada, arizona, colorado, utah (to ride in Moab) idaho, british columbia in canada, Anchorage at the bottom of alaska to the Yukon territory up in the top of alaska, then back down.

Then my longest day fully loaded was 1280miles from Whistler in British columbia, to my house in berkeley, then rest for a day and keep going all the way to the bottom of the baja peninsula in mejico, finally come back to the house to start a new job next day.

Fun, Fun, fun, pain, Pain, PAIN, No pain, no gain, No fun, No way.

I saw the bikes on top the bus and thought that they were handmade titanium ones. But I was too tired to ask for it. Especially the bar and the seat angle are kind of unique. The fork design looks close to the first "suspension forks" of the Schwinn cruisers of the 70's. Looks very nice but I think I would kill me riding his bike with his handlebar.

The 6x6 Octamog of your friend Mark is a really a big one! I took a look at his gallery - damn it!

The Beetle story is a typical American story! No comment!
I remember when we were at my uncles house in NJ when we were little stubs aged 3 or 4. It was a hot humid midsummer and we were playing nearly naked in front of the house and the neighbours were about to call the police. Unbelievable here in Germany!

The rides on your motorbike are really big ones. Thumbs up.
BTW: A friend of mine just lives a couple of miles away from Berkley. Biking should not be that bad in the bay area?

jeff's bikes are a Dream to ride but a nightmare to afford

I really like his approach to material studies and the possible benefits plus he is also a artist, very Renascence if you ask me.

the Truck is actually a 8X8 but the guy that help mark modified the chassis runs a company call 6x6 so they keep his logos on the wheel locks.

That truck is crazy, since the front and rear most wheels turn concentrically the turning radius is smaller than most cars, very cool.

He has many projects for it (independent electric motors for each wheel using a Biodiesel generator as power source, sadly not as much money to accomplish them.

well yes this "Moral bound" country is kind of strange, actually Berkeley and this whole area is very different than the rest of the country, main reason why i live here.

On the other hand a few years back I did a pretty long trip in europe with a friend (Dolomites, alps, etc, oh man I love your mountains) and in one of the last legs we stop in Zurich on the way to the Touratech in the black forest area of germany and we were approach a few times (In a period of two hours when eating lunch) by people telling us that "You need to wash your bike"

To each his own.:(

Taking about controling

Well this country is very Big, In europe have I cross from Italy to france (paris) in one day (Crossing the stelvio in the swiss land, then germany) but here that same effort varelly takes you out of california, main reason to have a big old bike that can eat miles like is no tomorrow.
BTW: A friend of mine just lives a couple of miles away from Berkley. Biking should not be that bad in the bay area?

Again this area is very progressive, so the bicycle culture is very strong, even if long distance travel is almost impossible (just to many boring miles to cover), plus is no really a proper train service and the buses are lamme, in short this place is design for self transportation A.K.A. bigASS cars.

Just for reference here are some pictures of the Old style JP morgen stem.
