i would say the reason for the whole issue is some manufacturing or material failure of the dust wiper. normally there is some grease in the oil seal that is placed under the dust wiper. the grease on the stanchion that stays there even if you compress the fork could be the evidence of a too loose seat of the lip of the dust wiper on the stanchion. if this was the case, the dust wiper would let dirt pass, so the room between the oil seal and the dust wiper will be packed with dirt over time. the sand graines from the dirt are highly abrasive and would scratch the stanchtion.
in this case sram should repair the fork for free. it is like selling you a frame with loose bolts. unless you use it, nothing is really broken. the damage occures only once you actually start rinding it.
