hey folks,

i've just got some money on my hands and was thinking of upgrading my brake system from regular hydraulics to disc brakes.

before i do this, however, i'd like to hear other people's ideas on this, as some reckon disc brakes are not actually thaaaat good, make funny noises, bend your forks over the time (as you're only running a single disc the braking force is assymentrical on your fork stanchions).

in particular, i'de be keen to hear about WHICH disc brake is a good break. i reckon i have about $800-1,000 spare (translates into DM900-1100) and would like to invest into something that works, and that lasts.

it'd be great to hear back from some of you.

cheers,
oli

hi ofloerl,

your topic was discussed last week. see "Hilfe! Welche Disk Brake?" started by desertbum. i´m afraid you are not very familiar with currency calculations. let me explain: your 800-1000$ are recently about 1760 - 2200DM worth!! 1$ = 2,23 DM today. with this money you will be able to buy the hell of a disk brake! see below!!!!!

i´m not very professional with the disc brake topic. however, i break with magura clara and i´m very content with them. they are cheap and very efficient. you might want to buy the metal brake levers as those plastic ones originally shipped with the clara are bullsh**, eh not very good. the clara model is NOT recommended if you ride downhill. in this case might want to buy one of the stronger models such as gustav M (magura) or hope or or or ... see the other thread.

if you can´t read german then you should post your settings here:
do you ride downhill, freeride or x-country, which bike, which frok do you have etc. etc ??

so long
cheers
:bier:

p.s.
ooooooooooooooooh! sorry. i just saw that you are from australia, so your currency calc is ok!!
i had stupidly assumed you are american. sorry. anyhow, you have enough money for a good disk brake.

for the money you saved you are able to buy a VERY good brake.
if i were you i would buy the "hope pro" which is very powerful, silent and good looking.it is one of the best diskbrakes i have ever seen.
ride on,chris

Hi,

I agree with "bikefreak" - if I had 1000 AUS$ I would buy a pair of HOPE Discbrakes, like the Pro, O2, DH04 or XC4 - depends on your riding style. If you prefer doing XC or just cruising, I recommend the XC4 - if you are a "Freerider" or a Downhiller, get the DH04.

Another really kewl Discbrake is the Hayes FH or Shimano XT.

Where is Townsville? I will be in Australia in october, in Sydney, Hamilton Island, Ayers Rock Resort and Melbourne ;-)

hi man. nice to hear from australia :)
bikefreak and frank told you the right decision!
hope is the very best of... but there's also an other disc-brake that rules. that would be the hayes full hydraulic 8". it's radical like the hope dh04, but cheaper ... and the design is deluxe.
that were the possibilities for downhill...
if you want to have a discbrake for freeride, tour or crosscountry you should buy the shimano xt-discbrake. it brakes nearly good as a hayes or a hope ... but just nearly. it costs around 400 dm (the hayes also does... the hope costs about 600 dm).

i have experiences with hayes and with shimano and i swear they are the greatest in time... the hope also, but i've never ridden it...

okay. i hope my posting will help you to find the right discbrake!
irie super

ps. you really should buy a discbrake because of the ultimate brakefeeling and -power! also if you ride while it rains or in the mud!!!
