"
The rear hub is based off of an '07 XTR hub, only with a smaller cassette body. It has four internal pawls with 10-degrees of engagement. As an example, Chris King hubs have less than five degrees of engagement, but as a result, tend to have a significant amount of drag. Shimano came to the conclusion that 10-degrees was a good compromise; you don't have the instant engagement, but you get a hub that will spin more freely. Expect it to come with 14-16 and 18-tooth cogs."

A HEALTHY RIVALRY

Marc Caisso and Giacomo Coustellier, two former UCI Junior World Champions and UCI Elite World Champions were on hand at the Marseille Moto Indoor Competition for the Moto vs. VTT spectacle. It was a good opportunity to learn about their 2005 season as well as the beginning of the 06 season.

TM: What did you take from the 2005 season?
GC: I learned that overall I have to make myself more present, in order to have a chance to win and compete with my peers who ride every weekend. In 2006, I will be at every major French competition, International competition, as well as the Regional comps such as the Rhone Alpes Cup and the Trials Spirit Cup. Otherwise, I have changed my training philosophy, and I am going to work on other moves in order to follow the evolution of trials. It is already paying off. Today, we are riding 26 inch bikes a lot like 20's.
MC: For me, I did comps and training as well, and pretty much did every national and international competition. In 2006, I will do as many competitions as I can so that I can remain at the level of the top riders in the world. However, seeing how quickly things are evolving, if I want to stay in the top 5, I have to work on certain techniques. I used to bring several techniques to the table when I was younger, but today it seems everyone is bringing them. If you don’t follow and learn the evolution of trials, you’ll quickly get passed up.

TM: What do you think of the evolution of the UCI sections? In particular, the contrast between the natural sections for qualifying and the artificial sections of the finals?
GC: It’s not representative of the level of each rider.
MC: For me, it wasn’t a true World Championship Final. It was based solely on power. You were having to throw yourself out there, and put your feet down to assure a landing. It did not reflect the diversity of trials. The qualifying sections should have been used for the finals, for we were able to see sections that test the level and styles of each rider.
GC: We currently use a system for the finals that has 4 sections with 2 laps, which has to be done in 1hr. 15 minutes. We make do with it. But when there are two obstacles that are impossible to skip, the competition is ruined.
MC: The level of riding is evolving so quickly that it is hard for section designers to realize what they are building. We definitely need to review the competencies of designers. Sometimes we run across a section which is super easy, followed by one which is impossible. In my opinion, riders should hold onto their points from the qualifications. It used to be like that, and I don’t know why they changed it. At least all the effort you put into the qualifications would carry over the next day into the finals. Look at Giaco.. We won the qualifiers, which did nothing for him, and then got last place (8th) in the finals. It doesn’t reflect his true level.

TM: Marc, we saw you sporting the Scorpa colors during the summer.....
MC: In reality I had a moral contract with Scorpa. I carried their colors all season long. I was supposed to have the final bike built by the end of October. However, things didn’t work out between Scorpa and Koxx, the manufacturer of the bicycle. So the project, ended up falling through and Scorpa apologized saying I was a collateral victim of the project. It’s really a shame, because it was another bike on the market and we got along well. I have some good contacts for 2006, but I can’t say anything else at the moment.

TM: You now have your own frame.. The Giacomo Coustellier Promodel...
GC: I now have a bike which is more competitive in weight and geometry. Due to it’s versatility, I can compete with all the other riders, but mostly it is adapted to my style of riding. Even though I am very satisfied, I have some changes coming in the near future!

TM: Yesterday, I saw Marc profiting from some explanations from Giacomo on a sidehop. After watching you both some more, it seems you were helping each other?
MC: It’s true that we are watching each other all the time. When I arrived at 18 years old with Vinco, we brought several things to trials. After several more years, there was nothing really new. Then arrived Gilles and Giacomo. You explained it to them, they learned it, they then brought their own techniques, and soon they have already passed you! Like you see frequently, the student passes the teacher! When Giaco will be 26-27 years old, there will be young riders arriving and it will be the same for him. It’s true that I find it bizarre that they explain things to me, but it also makes me very happy. Since we get along well, our rivalry is a healthy one, and if we can teach each other things, it makes us more than happy to do so.
GC: Marc has had an unbelievable success and he has marked his period. Every trialist has been inspired by him, as well as Vinco, who brought new moto techniques such as the tap. I don’t think of myself of having passed Marc by that much. A rider like him has a lot of resources, so for him motivation is more important at this time. He doesn’t have anything to be envious of, from any rider.

TM: On the sections, we see that the public admires Caisso’s style...
Marc: I appreciate it, but it is somewhat the trials from the past. It has lots of rolling, fluidity, and precision. However, in 2005, it was all about power!

TM: Is it important to ride at an Indoor Moto comp like Marseille?
GC: Media-wise, it’s good. It’s lets you show people bicycle trials, and you can ride on some beautiful sections in front of some trials educated people. Plus, it’s nice to ride with a friend like Marc, because we’re not always competing against each other.
MC: Here, there is nothing really at stake. It permits us to ride in the winter on some huge sections, where a lot of power is needed. Which is also my weakness!

TM: Speaking of power, Giaco rallye raced in 2005. And for 2006?
GC: Yes! I have a huge program: Rallye Sur Terre, Asphalt Championship of France, etc.. Everything is starting to fall into place. The budget is close to buckling, but we’re going for the title in the Clio Cup, group N, as well. It’s a promotional formula that will allow me to win a car that can fly, in Super 1600. Like VTT (mtb trials), I’m working hard to get there, and eventually, I will make it.

TM: How do you compete in both sports, at the highest level?
GC: The hardest thing to deal with is the stress. Otherwise the sports are very complimentary. Notably, each demands extremely high concentration.

TM: And you Marc, what do you do besides VTT?
MC: I am doing a lot of moto trials. In 2006, I am going to compete in several regional events. Otherwise, I am working on the organizational aspects and getting kids involved in trials.

TM: What do you wish for each other in 2006?
MC: I hope he stays healthy, he continues his relationship, and he succeeds on the bike, because he really deserves it. I think that along with his brother, he is one of the only riders who have put the huge amount of hours of training and hard work to get to where he is. I hope that the 2006 World Champion will be French, and that he is standing right next to me at that moment!
GC: Thanks Marc, I appreciate that. I hope that you continue to ride with the best, as long as it makes you happy. If you have the motivation, everything will follow. Anyway, it will be in your best interest to fight hard within yourself if you want to win in 2006...

Marc Caisso is 26 and lives in Montpellier. 2 time UCI Elite World Champion (99 and 2001), Junior World Champion in 1997, and has podiumed 7 times in 8 attempts!

Giacomo Coustellier is 21 and lives in Martigues. UCI Elite World Champion in 2003, Junior World Champion in 2002, and he rides the Koxx "Giacomo Coustellier Pro-Model".
