hi, das hier wurde vor kurzem in der firstflight newsgroup zu den Fat rahmennummern geschrieben:
For that small number of people actually interested in this level of detail, here is some of what I have learned so far. Thanks to Dan, Michael and Bruce for sharing some of their serial numbers. The larger the sample size, the better we can decipher the numbers.
The early bikes included the year and a production number for that year. Michael's 82 with #8213 is a easy example, the 13th bike built in 1982. Jeff's 84 is similar. When Fat City began to offer different geometry like the Wicked, they added an alpha character, like W, to signify the model. At some point they also added a digit to correspond to the size, (could be alpha or numeric depending upon model).
Some easy examples:
197M1L M for Monster Fat, 1 for 1991, L for large
736 W08 W for Wicked, 0 for 1990, 8 for 18"
185B4M B for Buck Shaver, 4 for 1994, M for medium
Some of the later bikes are more intuitive.
YO ML 2347 A Medium/Large Yo Eddy, (but what about the year?) Should be 2000
YB 10 065 Also a 2000, 10 inch Yo Betty
Some of the bikes don't follow these patterns, however, and they are the real challenges. Bruce's 91 Wicked is #13458W. Obviously the W is for Wicked, is the first character for 1991? Bruce, is this bike an 18"? I have something similar in an 19 .5" 89 Wicked, 04869W. Can't figure out if the 9 designates 1989 or 19.5". I am certain about the year as I bought this bike new.
Michael's 87 Fat Chance was #04948 and I don't know what to make of that. Michael, the bike was a 19.5"? Michael's 88 Fat is # 10858F, only one that I have seen with an F. Michael thinks that perhaps because they were special ordered? Who knows?
I have been told that the folks at Fat City were a wild and crazy bunch, and were likely to do anything, not always so concerned about the rules. But hey, they made some great bikes!
