Hi everyone,

Pardon the English (meiner Deutsch ist nicht so gut).

I am in the market for a new bike in the upcoming year and really curious about your experiences with the saturn 14 and/or 16. I love the engineering and looks of Nicolai so I pretty much already made up my mind I should have one :). I am however really debating about the 14 or 16. I live in the tip of the south of the Netherlands (Maastricht) but pretty much only ride in the Ardennes or aachenerwald. My short traveler at the moment (120/140) Is not really sufficient for the terrain. However I have a tendency to underbike and I want a good 'do it all' (not sure if thats even possible).

This thread is more about the G models, however many of us also have experience with the Saturns and will be able to help you out! I personally only have an Argon GAM, which compares to the Saturn 14, geometry-wise, despite not being full squish, and can be forked from 140 to 160. I think it's surprisingly capable and I wouldn't hesitate to choose it for most trails outside the alps. If you order the "ST" variant of the 14, you get the ability to run it with a burly 150-160mm fork upfront, which actually was something I intended to do, but then decided that a S14, especially if beefed up, is too close to my G1, so I went for the hardtail.
Maastricht is about 4hrs away from Nicolai - maybe do a weekend trip to the factory and try them both? You can check out the Deister trails along the way.
 
If you like to be underbiked, which I'm usually too, I can recommend the S14ST, I have it myself and done some gnarly stuff with it. Run it with 150 or 160 up front and ride it like you stole it.
 
Thank you for letting me know. Really curious to testride the bikes at Nicolai. Saw something on the site they also drive towards certain spots on request to demo ride. They still do that? Sorry that I am posting in the G1 sub, pretty much google translating the threads haha.

Sounds good! Isn't the difference between rear and front paired with a 160 very noticeable? Never driven this modern geo bike before but i usually blast through my rear suspension instead of front but I'm a big dude (94kg with no backpack etc).

I tested both models, the Saturn 16 an the 14ST this fall during a test event that was organized by Nicolai themselves. It was a great event and I was really excited getting to know the people personally. Thus if you will be able to manage a visit in the factory (from you its closer than from me g), it would be a good chance to take the right decision. Otherwise call Max or one of his colleagues after the Christmas break. They have really helpful tips ;)

After having ridden both models it was pretty clear to me to order the Saturn 16. it is not that much heavier (neither in weightening nor in geometry) but more capable and also ready for coil shocks. For me this is the one do-it-all bike! You can go for a tour as well as shred some park lines easily. But I also have to tell that I am not the one who loves to be underbiked. For sure the S14 ST is also made to survive in rigid terrain but I‘d love to have a little reserve in the backhand and to have the suspension a little more plush than stiff.
The kinematics of the S16 with coilshock was perfect for me during the testride and I hope to achieve the same result/feeling with my built!

Sounds great. Looks like demo riding is the best option. The option to run a coil is nice as well. Thanks for responding.

Maybe I have to add a comment or to state more precisely what I mean with „perfect for me“.
With the coil shock in the S16 the suspension is very sensitive and responsive especially for small/middle bumps (heavier terrain was not available for testing) but in the middle it is strong enough to push and jump across edges and it is not sinking into the travel in corners.

For me the S16 with coilshock is a very versatile bike. Ok, for someone fighting for the last gramms it is maybe not an option, but if you like to ride, having a solid basis at a top manufacturing quality with long warrenty without any limitation (weight or riding style), this frame is really hatd to beat.
A propos weight tuning, maybe I should start at myself as having approx 100kg. And maybe this is also a reason why coilshocks work more sensitive as airshocks need high pressure with corresponding disadventages…

Just curious, what shock and what spring are you going to run, and what shock/spring was the demo bike equipped with?

I am not really bothered with the weight to be honest, same as you. I just want to ride and have fun. I notice I keep looking for more gnarly trails to ride however not exactly in the MTB walhalla over here haha (Ardennes region is actually pretty good in my opinion). I was also checking the starling murmur but brexit and the engineering from Nicolai draw me in. Also curious about a coil since my gut feeling thinks that it will be a good one for my weight...


Now sizing (187cm) is also a tricky one but that can be solved by demoing. Thank your help btw

Hi,

My Saturn 16 will be equipped with an EXT Storia V3 and springs with 550 and 600.
Within the demo bike, I rode the same config (Max or Vincent) changed the shock extra to my favourite config incl change to the right (550) spring rate - perfect service!

I will start the ride with the 550 spring and having the 600 in petto for more heavier rides or with more luggage on the back or with protectors etc.
As the shock mount hardware can stay on the shock for the spring change, it can be done quickly if needed.

I rode and will ride at the S16 the 29“ standard config, 230 x 60mm for 150mm travel. 65 shock travel is partly possible, but depending on chainstay mutation and mounted tires. As I don‘t want to struggle at a certain stage, decision was taken to get the 60mm version.

The 550 spring is quite soft for 100kg net, but had no problems with bottom out during the testride and I was really satisfied with it for the first impression.
Lets see after getting started on my hometrails, then I write a more differenciated feedback in the S16 thread next to this one here. Unfortunately, I am still waiting for the headset and some other nice parts. Would like to have it under the Christmas Tree but chances getting less by now..
