he is not looking for any durability contest. this is about building the lightest MTB. i just explained above that only a certain functionality for offroad riding is the limit. all the rest is free. at least that's my understanding in these project-builds. it's pretty clear to everybody that only 50 kilo ladies might be able to ride those bikes but they could ride them offroad. Are you able to try it on a REAL alps trail? Good luck!![]()

i was just complaining about the M2Racer pedals which don't work in the dirt, regardless of the riders weight. a tiny bit of dirt makes them useless.

But now what remain of a mtb? The "without damping" fork? Or only the shape?![]()
if the fork is damped or not has no effect in my opinion. earliest suspension forks also had just springs and no damping. as long as it moves it is kind of a shock. if it's performing good or bad is on another sheet. i'd say it's better than completely rigid but not by much
there shouldn't be any discussion about good or bad anyway - we all know what such a bike is capable of. it would be easy for Heinz to mount the new Ritchey Carbon rigid fork at just 470g. completely offroad worthy. but he wants a suspension fork. i'd say his SID is still rideable by a lightweight rider.
same with other bikes in the light-bike gallery:
mine for example is ridden everyday but some say it can't be, it would last only a couple of kilometers before it would break...that might even be true for some guys out there. so what? it is holding up for me so that is my own definition of ultralight: it has to take daily abuse without restricions that hinder me to go fast. durability is also important and that's where most people differ in opinion. some don't care when they have to fiddle around on their bike to keep it going, others want a bike that is reliable and doesn't need any extra care. there's no agreement here. just have a look at tires where some want durability, others light weight, others just grip...that's a prime example.
don't start the discussion of what makes sense or not. we had this debate million times here and it leads nowhere. everyone has different opinion, different needs.
just enjoy what Heinz and others do!
Ok, let's return to old elastomer or rigid forks and thumbshifters... and throw away the last 20 years of innovation![]()
jetzt musst du nur noch definieren ob der airbag der apfel oder die birne in dem vergleich istif we would do such with cars i hear you saying: "but Schumachers Ferrari has no airbag!"![]()
