Hallo
Technical Trends
The energy density of Li-
ion prismatic cells has
increased by about 10%/annum and therefore more
than doubled since 1994. Rates of growth with
current materials have begun to decrease but new
materials are expected to appear in the next three to
four years.
Battery material trends can be summarised as follows:
ô Cathode  LiCoO2 is still the major material but
LiMn2O4 will increase. Ni type will be needed for
>2.5 Ah 18650 and HEV batteries.
ô Anode  350,Ah/g with 90% initial efficiency in
common
ô Shape  more and more prismatic cells in portable
PCs
A comparison of LiCoO2 and LiMn2O4 battery
materials is shown in Figure 6.
Economic Trends
The cobalt price has increased drastically since
October 2003 resulting in the major battery producers
announcing price increases of up to 10% for their
products in the first quarter of 2004.
The worldwide trend is towards prismatic (<6
mm) and polymer cells. Strong growth is
projected for Li-polymer batteries (Figure 7).
Figure 8 shows the change in average price per
cell since 2000.
