Schurter und Forster demonstrieren ihre Stärke
Die ersten 21 Kilometer des Absa Cape Epic 2019 sind Geschichte! Der Prolog am Fuße des Kapstadter Tafelbergs dürfte wohl noch keine zu großen Entscheidungen im Hinblick auf das Gesamtklassement mit sich gebracht haben, doch erste Erkenntnisse wer in den kommenden Tagen in den Fokus rücken könnte, gab es allemal. Annika Langvad und Anna van der Breggen bei den Damen und Nino Schurter und Lars Forster bei den Herren heißen die ersten Etappensieger beim Absa Cape Epic 2019.
Damen – van der Breggen & Langvad untermauern Favoritenstellung
Gerade einmal die Hälfte der 21 Kilometer langen Prologstrecke hatte das zuletzt gestartete Duo Annika Langvad/Anna van der Breggen hinter sich, als die zwei Minuten vor ihnen gestartete Paarung Sabine Spitz/Nadine Rieder bereits vor ihnen auftauchten. Von Beginn an ließen die großen Favoritinnen auf den Gesamtsieg keine Zweifel aufkommen, wer am morgigen Montag das orange-gelbe Führungstrikot tragen würde. Mühelos zogen sie schließlich an der deutschen Paarung vorbei und konnten letztlich sogar noch die vier Minuten vor ihnen gestarteten Jennie Stenerhag und Mariske Strauss einholen.
#Annika Langvad und Anna van der Breggen waren heute ein Klasse für sich. Das Investec-Songo-Specialized-Duo konnte sogar die beiden vor ihnen gestarteten Teams einholen - Shaun Roy/Cape Epic
Insgesamt gelang es dem Duo vom Team Investec-Songo-Specialized 2:35 Minuten Vorsprung auf die nächsten Verfolgerinnen herauszufahren. Dies waren die Polin Maja Wloszczowska und die Schweizerin Ariane Lüthi vom Kross-Spur Team. Über drei Viertel der Rennstrecke lagen noch die deutsche Adelheid Morath und ihre südafrikanische Teampartnerin Candice Lill auf dem zweiten Rang, doch die starken Qualitäten des Kross-Spur-Duos im bergablastigen letzten Viertel der Strecke machten schließlich den Unterschied zwischen den Plätzen zwei und drei. Morath und Lill gelang als Drittplatzierte ein guter Einstieg in die Rennwoche in Südafrika – 15 Sekunden trennten die beiden von Lüthi und Wloszczowska und 2:49 Minuten fehlten dem deutsch-südafrikanischen Duo bis zu den beiden Spitzenreitern van der Breggen und Langvad.
Sabine Spitz und Nadine Rieder vom Team Meerendal Wiawis Rotwild verpassten das Podium um 37 Sekunden. Die Altmeisterin Spitz und der Cape-Epic-Neuling Rieder harmonierten beim ersten gemeinsamen Auftritt offensichtlich sehr gut miteinander – auch sie lagen bis zum letzten Streckenabschnitt noch vor den späteren Zweitplatzierten vom Kross Racing Team und verloren dementsprechend bergab etwas an Zeit. Auf Rang vier landeten Mariske Strauss und Jennie Stenerhag vom Team Silverback-Fairtree. Auch sie liegen mit knappen 1:30 Minuten Rückstand auf die Zweitplatzierten aussichtsreich im Rennen. Der Rückstand auf die Tagesschnellsten ist jedoch mit vier Minuten bereits ein heftiges Päckchen, das sie in den kommenden Tagen schleppen müssen.
Herren – Schurter/Forster furious, Fumic/Avancini im Soll
Die ersten 21 Kilometer der Herren brachten erste durchaus überraschende Entwicklungen ans Tageslicht, die erste richtungsweisende Erkenntnisse für die noch anstehenden sieben Renntage lieferten. Dass die Paarung Schurter/Forster, bestehend aus dem amtierenden XC-Weltmeister und dem amtierenden XC-Europameister, auf der verhältnismäßig kurzen Renndistanz die Nase vorn haben wird, konnte man durchaus erwarten. Nino Schurter und Lars Forster zauberten einen fabelhaften Prolog in den südafrikanischen Dreck – 41 Sekunden Vorsprung (bei 43:41 Minuten Fahrzeit) auf die Zweitplatzierten Manuel Fumic und Henrique Avancini sind angesichts der hohen Leistungsdichte im Männerfeld mehr als nur ein Achtungszeichen.
#Lars Forster und Nino Schurter unterwegsin Richtung Gelb! 40 Sekunden Vorsprung nehmen die beiden Eidgenossen auf die sieben noch anstehenden Etappen - Shaun Roy/Cape Epic
Für das Cannondale-Duo Avancini/Fumic war der Auftakt des Cape Epic ein wahres Dejà-Vu-Erlebnis. Bereits im Vorjahr belegten sie auf derselben Prologstrecke den zweiten Rang – eine solide Ausgangsbasis für die kommenden Renntage. Insbesondere der Vorsprung auf einige weitere favorisierte Teams dürfte das deutsch-brasilianische Duett zufrieden stimmen. Vorjahressieger Jaroslav Kulhavy mit Sam Gaze landete auf dem achten Rang mit 1:50 Minuten Rückstand, weitere stark einzuschätzende Teams wie beispielsweise das Duo Jochen Käß/Daniel Geismayr vom Team Centurion-Vaude (10. Rang, +2:09 min) mussten ebenfalls einen ersten Rückstand in Kauf nehmen.
Pechvögel des Tages waren die beiden einheimischen Fahrer Alan Hatherly und Matthew Beers. Der U23-Weltmeister aus dem vergangenen Jahr war mit seinem Landsmann auf Podiumskurs, als ein Reifendefekt bei Beers wenige Kilometer vor dem Ziel die Hoffnungen auf einen Platz unter den ersten Drei zunichtemachte. Als Fünftplatzierte konnten sie den Rückstand noch in Grenzen halten – umso größer wird ihre Motivation in den nächsten Tagen sein dieses Missgeschick wieder auszumerzen. Dritte wurden unterdessen Sergio Mantecon und Ondrej Cink vom Team Kross-Spur mit 53 Sekunden Rückstand auf die Sieger. Die beiden Cross-Country-Spezialisten werden sich in den kommenden Tagen vermutlich verstärkt der Konkurrenz der Langstreckenspezialisten erwehren.

Die Asse der Langstrecke mussten auf den ersten 21 Kilometern einiges an Rückstand auf die schnellsten Teams des Tages in Kauf nehmen. Die beiden hoch gehandelten Duos des Team Bulls landeten auf den Rängen 14 und 23. Simon Stiebjahn und Urs Huber waren angesichts 2:20 Minuten Rückstands auf die Sieger nicht zu sehr unzufrieden – die „Bulls Legends“ Karl Platt und Urs Huber liegen eine Minute hinter den beiden Teamkollegen im ersten Gesamtklassement des Cape Epic 2019. Unterdessen gelang dem dritten Team der „Bullen“, den „Youngsters“ Simon Schneller und Martin Frey als 17. ein gelungener Einstieg in die Rennwoche.
