Es wäre vermessen zu sagen, dass das Cape Epic 2019 entschieden wäre – zu viele spektakuläre Wendungen hat es in der Geschichte dieses Rennens schon gegeben. Doch eine Vorentscheidung im Kampf um das gelbe Trikot sowie die Podiumsplatzierungen ist am heutigen Tage definitiv gefallen: Nino Schurter und Lars Forster konnten ihre Gesamtführung weiter ausbauen und Samuele Porro/Damiano Ferraro enteilten zudem dem Team Bulls Heros um Urs Huber und Simon Stiebjahn im Kampf um Platz drei. Bei den Damen waren Anna van der Breggen und Annika Langvad einmal mehr souverän unterwegs.

Herren – Stürze, Defekte und ein Überraschungssieg

Diese sechste Etappe des Cape Epic hatte wieder einmal viel zu bieten. Angefangen bei dem durchaus überraschenden Sieg vom Italiener Johnny Cattaneo und dem Kolumbianer Luis Meija bis hin zu einem spannenden Rennverlauf. Zunächst wurde auch heute das Tempo schon wenige Kilometer nach dem Start enorm in die Höhe getrieben, so dass etliche Teams kapitulieren mussten und schlussendlich auf dem ersten Gipfel nur noch eine Hand voll Paarungen beisammen waren. Manuel Fumic und Henrique Avancini fehlten schon zu diesem Zeitpunkt – vor allem beim deutschen XC-Meister waren die Nachwirkungen von seinem Sturz am Vortag zu spüren, sodass Fumic und Avancini ihren eigenen Rhythmus fuhren. Unglücklich aus Sicht der beiden: Vorne drückten die bis dato Gesamtdritten Samuele Porro und Damiano Ferraro mächtig auf das Gaspedal und verringerten den virtuellen Rückstand auf Platz zwei von Fumic/Avancini um fast die Hälfte. Es schien so als müssten die beiden Cannondale-Profis um ihren zweiten Platz im Gesamtranking bangen. Doch Fumic/Avancini teilten sich ihre Kräfte gut ein, kamen eindrucksvoll zurück und finishten am Ende auf Platz vier. In die Karten spielte dem Duo allerdings auch, dass das Team Trek Selle San Marco wohl dem hohen Tempodiktat des Etappenbeginns etwas Tribut zollen musste und zudem mindestens zwei Stürze und einen Defekt zu verzeichnen hatte.

Die Gesamtführenden Nino Schurter und Lars Forster gingen das Rennen heute kontrolliert an. Zu keinem Zeitpunkt hatte der neutrale Beobachter Grund zur Annahme, dass das Duo die Lage nicht komplett im Griff hätte. Deren Backup-Team um Andri Frischknecht und Gert Heyns konnte bis zur Hälfte des Teilstücks dem gelben Trikot folgen, sodass selbst im Falle eines Defekts die beiden Schweizer wohl ohne großen Zeitverlust ihre Fahrt hätten fortsetzen können. Gemeinsam lag das Duo mit Luis Meija und Johnny Cattaneo (7C CBZ Wilier) stets in Schlagdistanz zu den beiden enteilten Italienern Porro/Ferraro. Als die beiden Trek-Piloten, wie bereits erwähnt, Probleme bekamen, kam es zum Überholmanöver der beiden Verfolgerteams Scott-SRAM und 7C CBZ Wilier. Cattaneo und Meija nutzten die Gunst der Stunde und attackierten direkt nach dem Passieren der defektgeplagten Italiener. Schurter und Forster ließen das italienisch-kolumbianische Duo davonziehen, da von ihnen keine Gefahr in der Gesamtwertung ausging. Meija/Cattaneo fuhren dementsprechend ungefährdet ihrem ersten Tagessieg entgegen – 2:19 Minuten vor Schurter/Forster überquerten sie den Zielstrich in Stellenbosch. Trek Selle San Marco rettete sich auf Rang drei ins Ziel mit 4:33 Minuten hinter Meija/Cattaneo und lediglich 33 Sekunden vor Fumic und Avancini, die sich mit einem konstanten Tempo auf Rang vier arbeiteten. Mit diesem Tagesergebnis zementiert sich allmählich auch die Reihenfolge der ersten Drei in der Gesamtwertung: Schurter/Forster bauten ihren Vorsprung weiter aus, Cannondale rangiert komfortabel auf Platz zwei acht Minuten hinter Scott-SRAM und neun Minuten vor Trek Selle San Marco.

Der Kolumbianer Louis Meija und der Italiener Johnny Cattaneo nutzten die Gunst der Stunde und konnten sich nach dem Defekt des Team Trek Selle San Marco absetzen.

Im Kampf um den dritten Platz musste das Team Bulls Heroes um unseren Live-Blogger Simon Stiebjahn und Urs Huber einen weiteren Dämpfer hinnehmen. Zwar lief es für das Duo besser und glücklicher als tags zuvor, nichtdestotrotz verloren die Beiden wertvolle Minuten auf die starken Italiener Porro/Ferraro. Sie landeten am Ende auf Platz sieben.

Damen – Business as usual!

Bei den Damen war, nach dem Sieg von Adelheid Morath und Candice Lill gestern, heute wieder alles beim Alten. Schon wenige Minuten nach dem Startschuss machten sich die Specialized-Fahrerinnen Annika Langvad und Anna van der Breggen auf und davon. Nachdem die niederländische Straßenweltmeisterin gestern erstmals kleine Schwächen zeigte, rehabilitierte sich das Duo heute eindrucksvoll: Im Ziel lagen sie 8:43 Minuten vor Morath/Lill.

Die deutsch-südafrikanische Paarung schlug sich heute dennoch einmal mehr stark. Zwar konnten und wollten die beiden dem Tempo von Specialized nicht folgen, doch das Duo fuhr souverän auf den zweiten Platz. Und das obwohl sich die beiden heute körperlich nicht optimal fühlten, wie Morath im Ziel erklärte. Mit etwas weniger als zwei Minuten vor Maja Wloczcowska und Ariane Lüthi von Kross-Spur verteidigten Morath/Lill aber problemlos ihren zweiten Gesamtrang und bauten den Vorsprung sogar minimal aus. Im Overallranking stehen die Damen von Kross-Spur auf Platz drei, die vor allem aufgrund eines Infekts bei der Polin in den letzten Tagen nicht mehr ganz ihr volles Leistungspotential abrufen konnten. Die Abstände in der Gesamtwertung sind dementsprechend nun riesig: Langvad/van der Breggen führen vor der letzten Etappe mit 30 Minuten vor Morath/Lill, die wiederum circa 30 Minuten vor Lüthi/Wloczcowska liegen und dieses Duo hat ebenfalls einen Puffer von grob 30 Mintuten auf Platz vier. Es müsste schon viel passieren, dass sich hier noch etwas verschiebt – aber wie eingangs erwähnt: Das Cape Epic hat seine eigenen Gesetzte, das Rennen ist erst morgen zu Ende!

Sabine Spitz und Nadine Rieder finishten heute auf Platz vier und reduzierten auch in der Gesamtwertung den Rückstand auf die Viertplatzierten Jennie Stenerhag und Mariske Strauss. Für den Sprung unter die Top Drei in der Endabrechnung dürfte der Rückstand allerdings zu groß sein.

    Je nachdem mit welcher Taktik Cannondale ins Rennen gegangen ist, sind sie zum Teil mit Trinkrucksäcken losgefahren und haben sie dann später bei einer Verpflegungsstation abgelegt, oder umgekehrt.
