Aller guten Dinge sind drei! Oder doch vielleicht aller schlechten Dinge...? - Nino Schurter erlitt am dritten Tag in Folge einen Plattfuß. Gestern jedoch mit geringeren Auswirkungen: Nachdem er gemeinsam mit Lars Forster bereits solo an der Spitze unterwegs war, wurden sie durch den Plattfuß lediglich wieder von den Verfolgern eingeholt und konnten letztlich sogar noch den Zielsprint um den Etappensieg für sich entscheiden. Am dritten Tag des Cape Epic haben sich die Geschlagenen des Vortags eindrucksvoll zurückgemeldet: Bei den Damen konnten Pauline Ferrand-Prévot und Robyn de Groot den Spieß wieder umdrehen und sicherten sich vor Haley Batten und Sofia Gomez Villafane den Tagessieg auf der zweiten Etappe. Bei den Herren triumphierten erstmals die defektgeplagten Top-Favoriten Nino Schurter und Lars Forster vor Matthew Beers und Christopher Blevins. In der Gesamtwertung gab es keine Veränderungen.

Damen: BMC MTB Racing lässt die Muskeln spielen

Auf dem dritten Teilstück des Cape Epic, das die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer über 123 Kilometer vom Lourensford Wine Estate nach Greyton führte, meldeten sich Pauline Ferrand-Prévot und Robyn de Groot zurück im Kampf um den Gesamtsieg. Das französisch-südafrikanische Duo kam am Vortag etwas ins Straucheln und kassierte im Gesamtklassement von NinetyOne-Songo-Specialized einen Rückstand von über 10 Minuten. Doch am gestrigen Dienstag wendete sich das Blatt zugunsten der BMC-Fahrerinnen.

Der Reihe nach: Vom Start weg bildete sich eine Spitzengruppe, in der auch die vier Top-Teams des diesjährigen Cape Epic vertreten waren – BMC MTB Racing, NinetyOne-Songo-Specialized, Symbtech ZA und Faces Rola. Die Paarungen Lill/Strauss (Faces Rola) und Batten/Gomez Villafane (NinetyOne-Songo-Specialized) zeigten sich in der ersten Rennhälfte vermehrt in der Führungsarbeit und hinterließen zunächst einen starken Eindruck. Am letzten langen Anstieg des Tages zwischen Kilometer 85 und 95 schlug dann allerdings die Stunde von Pauline Ferrand-Prévot. Die Französin bekam bei ihrer ersten Cape Epic-Teilnahme am Montag eine Lehrstunde erteilt, dass das Rennen am Westkap definitiv seine eigenen Gesetze besitzt – mit Mühe quälte sich die zig-fache Weltmeisterin ins Ziel.

Am Dienstag dann das Comeback: Am Jacques‘ Climb zog die 30-Jährige auf und davon, ihre Teampartnerin Robyn de Groot konnte folgen, NinetyOne-Songo-Specialized hatte mit einer defekten Variostütze zu kämpfen und auch die übrigen Paarungen waren dem Tempodiktat der BMC-Fahrerin nicht gewachsen. Auf dem Gipfel des letzten Berges betrug der Vorsprung der französisch-südafrikanischen Paarung komfortable drei Minuten, welchen die Beiden auch souverän bis ins Ziel verteidigten.

In der Gesamtwertung konnte das BMC MTB Racing-Duo seinen Rückstand auf sechseinhalb Minuten reduzieren, was in Anbetracht der noch fünf ausstehenden Etappen kein uneinholbarer Rückstand zu sein scheint.

Ich habe gestern den Fehler gemacht, am Anfang zu schnell loszufahren. Dafür habe ich bezahlt. Heute bin ich langsamer gestartet und habe die Situation beobachtet. Es war eine viel bessere Strategie. Am letzten großen Anstieg bin ich eine kleine Attacke gefahren. Robyn war super stark und ich habe gesehen, dass sie mit mir mitgeht. Wir haben einen guten Vorsprung herausgefahren und sind danach einfach in einem guten Rhythmus ins Ziel gefahren.

Herren: Scott SRAM wieder im Pech und doch mit dem Sieg

Das Rennen der Herren bot am gestrigen Dienstag wieder einmal viel Spektakel. Zum einen handelten sich Nino Schurter und Lars Forster erneut einen Reifendefekt ein, zum anderen erlebte Matthew Beers vom Team Toyota-NinetyOne-Specialized ein ähnlich starkes Comeback wie Pauline Ferrand-Prévot bei den Damen.

Der Rennverlauf selbst gestaltete sich dagegen nicht unbedingt kurios, denn bis Kilometer 85 – bis zum Fuße des letzten langen Anstiegs – blieb eine große Spitzengruppe mit bis zu sieben Teams eng beisammen. Dann ergriffen Nino Schurter und Lars Forster die Flucht und brachten auch rasch circa 60 Sekunden zwischen sich und ihre Verfolger, ehe der amtierende XC-Weltmeister einmal mehr Luft am Hinterrad verlor. Das Backup-Team um Andri Frischknecht und Juri Ragnoli war zu diesem Zeitpunkt ebenfalls nicht in Reichweite, da das Duo schon zuvor einen Defekt zu beklagen hatte.

Dementsprechend rollte die große Spitzengruppe wieder zusammen, zu der gestern auch wieder die Prologsieger Matthew Beers und Christopher Blevins zählten. Beers hatte nach einem Einbruch am Vortag wieder zu alter Stärke zurückgefunden und fand sich schlussendlich sogar im Zielsprint um den Tagessieg wieder. Insgesamt drei Teams kamen nach einer sehr schnellen Schlussphase gemeinsam auf die Zielgerade: SCOTT SRAM, Toyota-NinetyOne-Specialized und Buff-Megamo. Das beste Ende hatte bekanntlich das Schweizer Duo.

In der Gesamtwertung hat die zweite Etappe keine großen Veränderungen mit sich gebracht. Canyon Northwave MTB um Andreas Seewald und Martin Stošek wurde gestern Vierter mit 10 Sekunden Rückstand. Damit verteidigte das deutsch-tschechische Duo problemlos ihr gelbes Leaderjersey. Toyota-NinetyOne-Specialized schob sich wieder nach vorne auf Gesamtrang drei. Als Vierte im Overallranking überraschen weiterhin Georg Egger und Lukas Baum von Speed Company Racing, die am Dienstag Fünfte wurden und in der Gesamtwertung nun sechs Sekunden hinter Platz drei liegen.

    Bei Flugzeugcrashes kommt häufig als erstes nach der Bergung eine Lackiercrew, um die Airline-und Herstellerlogos zu übermalen, damit nicht so viele Bilder von gecrashtem Material mit dem Firmenlogo in Umlauf kommen.
    Fürs Cape Epic könnte sich Maxxis das beim Scott-Team vielleicht langsam auch überlegen...

    Frage mich auch schon langsam was da abgeht. 3 Tage 3 Platten...
    Müsste das aber auch für den Fasttrak gelten dem auf einem der Bilder die Luft ausgegangen ist. Lustig wie im Vordergrund dann ein Racingralph an einem Cannondale vorbeikurbelt smilie
    Solange Maxxis am Podium steht, wird das schon passen. Meine Ikon haben deutlich weniger Pannen als meine Schwalbe zuvor. Denke der Fahrer bringt einfach zu viel Drehmoment auf den Reifen ;-)

    Denke ich nicht. Vermutlich ist die Zielsetzung jetzt aber eine andere als letzte Woche.
    Gut durchkommen und das Event zum Formaufbau nutzen.
