92 Kilometer, die das Klassement durcheinanderwürfeln: Die erste lange Marathon-Etappe des Cape Epic 2022 hatte es in sich. Viele Favoritinnen und Favoriten strauchelten aufgrund von Defekten oder physischen Problemen in der Hitze Südafrikas, der deutsche Marathon-Weltmeister Andreas Seewald und sein tschechischer Teamkollege Martin Stošek bewahrten jedoch kühlen Kopf und schlüpften in beeindruckender Manier ins Gelbe Trikot. Und auch bei den Damen gab es einen Führungswechsel: Sofia Gomez und Haley Batten, tags zuvor noch Viertplatzierte, jubelten über den Tagessieg und das eroberte orange Leadertrikot.

Damen: Batten & Gomez mit fahrtechnischer Finesse oben auf

Mit 92 Kilometern und 2.850 Höhenmetern erwartete die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer des Cape Epic auf der ersten schweren Etappe rund um das Lourensford Wine Estate bereits eine echte Härteprüfung. Diese wurde zudem erheblich erschwert durch heiße Bedingungen um 35 °C und trockene, staubige Streckenverhältnisse. Diese Grundvoraussetzungen führten sowohl bei den Damen als auch bei den Herren für turbulente Rennverläufe, die das Cape Epic schon seit vielen Jahren zum Legendenstatus verhelfen.

Zu Beginn der Etappe blieben im Damenfeld zunächst alle Favoritinnen eng beisammen, ehe sich am ersten längeren Anstieg des Tages das spätere Siegerduo Sofia Gomez/Haley Batten gemeinsam mit dem südafrikanischen Duett Mariske Strauss/Candice Lill absetzen konnte. In der folgenden Abfahrt konnten Gomez und Batten ihre fahrtechnische Stärke ausnutzen und sich leicht von den Prologzweiten Lill/Strauss lösen. Batten und Gomez zogen auf und davon und schienen auf dem besten Wege, einen souveränen Sieg einfahren zu können.

Denn die anderen mitfavorisierten Teams um die beiden Prolog-Siegerinnen Pauline Ferrand-Prévot und Robyn de Groot zeigten da bereits erste Schwächen. Zunächst war es de Groot, die dem hohen Einsatz tags zuvor Tribut zollen musste, im späteren Verlauf schließlich Ferrand-Prévot, die mit den hohen Temperaturen am Westkap zu kämpfen hatte, sodass beide weit zurückfielen. Auch das drittplatzierte Duo des Prologs, Ariane Lüthi und Amy Wakefield, konnte dem Tempo der beiden Spitzenduos am ersten langen Anstieg des Tages nicht folgen. Im Gegensatz zu Ferrand-Prévot und de Groot erholte sich das schweizerisch-südafrikanische Duo im Folgenden und blies zur Aufholjagd.

Nach 34 Kilometern lagen Lüthi und Wakefield noch fast drei Minuten hinter Sofia Gomez und Haley Batten, bereits 20 Kilometer später konnten sie bereits das Blatt auf ihre Seite wenden. Am zweiten längeren Anstieg des Tages über knapp 600 Höhenmeter konnten beide die Lücke zu den beiden Spitzenreiterinnen schließen und diese dann auch distanzieren. Doch wie so häufig beim Cape Epic schlug infolgedessen der Defektteufel bei Lüthi und Wakefield zu: Ein Plattfuß kostete das Duo wertvolle Zeit, sodass Gomez und Batten wieder aufschließen konnten und wenig später auf den letzten technisch anspruchsvolleren Kilometern vorbeiziehen konnten. Mit 1:50 Sekunden Vorsprung vor Lüthi und Wakefield rollten Gomez und Batten schließlich als Tagessiegerinnen über den Zielstrich, auf Position drei folgten 3:42 Minuten hinter den beiden Siegerinnen das südafrikanische Duo Mariske Strauss/Candice Lill. Die Prolog-Siegerinnen Pauline Ferrand-Prévot und Robyn de Groot verloren als Viertplatzierte 10:46 Minuten.

Herren: Seewald & Stošek stürmen in Gelb

Noch um einige Facetten reicher gestaltete sich parallel zur Konkurrenz der Damen das Rennen der Herren: Nachdem alle Fahrer tags zuvor beim Prolog auf sich alleine gestellt waren, sorgte der erste Massenstart des Cape Epic für hektische Szenen zu Beginn des Rennens mit einem enorm hohen Tempo von Beginn an. Am ersten längeren Anstieg des Tages konnte sich eine 15 Fahrer starke Gruppe um die bestplatzierten Teams des Prologs Toyota-Ninetynine-Specialized, Speed Company Racing und Canyon Northwave Racing absetzen. Mit dabei auch die beiden Pechvögel des Prologs, Nino Schurter und Lars Forster, die tags zuvor aufgrund eines Plattfußes bereits viel Zeit verloren hatten.

Und auch an Tag zwei sollte das eidgenössische Duo nicht ungeschoren davon kommen: Ein Plattfuß am Fuße des längsten Anstiegs des Tages warf Schurter und Forster erneut zurück, parallel dazu erlitten auch das deutsche Überraschungsduo des Vortages, Georg Egger und Lukas Baum, einen Defekt. Während Baum und Egger ihren Plattfuß recht mühelos mit einem Reifenplug flicken konnten, war Schurters Loch im Reifen derartig groß, dass einzig und alleine ein Ersatzschlauch Abhilfe schaffen konnte. Mit knapp fünf Minuten Zeitverlust konnte Schurter schließlich das Ersatzrad seines Teamkollegen Andri Frischknecht einbauen und die Aufholjagd starten.

Sowohl das deutsche Speed Company Racing Duo als auch die beiden Schweizer des Scott-SRAM-Teams schafften letztlich nicht mehr den Anschluss an die Spitze, sie belegten Rang sieben (+ 6:35 Minuten) und Rang fünf (+ 5:12 Minuten). Wesentlich mehr Zeit verloren unterdessen die beiden Prologsieger Matthew Beers und Christopher Blevins: Beers hatte zu Beginn der zweiten Hälfte der Etappe mit erheblichen Magenbeschwerden zu kämpfen und mühte sich mit letzten Kräften ins Ziel. Der Südafrikaner überquerte mit seinem amerikanischen Teamkollegen 9:21 Minuten hinter den Tagessieger Seewald und Stošek den Zielstrich.

An der Spitze zeigten indes die Marathon-Asse ihr ganzes Können: Allen voran Andreas Seewald und Martin Stošek, die bereits tags zuvor auf der kurzen Prologdistanz überzeugen konnten. Nach und nach schüttelten die beiden alle verbliebenen Begleiter ab und jagten solo dem Ziel entgegen. Konstant baute das Duo seinen Vorsprung aus und verschaffte sich somit ein Polster für die nächsten Tage: 3:23 Minuten brachten Seewald und Stošek zwischen sich und die schnellsten Verfolger José Dias und Hans Becking vom Buff-Megamo-Team. Auf Position drei kamen ebenfalls zwei Langstreckenspezialisten ins Ziel: Der Belgier Wout Alleman und der Italiener Fabian Rabensteiner überquerten 3:49 Minuten nach den beiden Tagessiegern der Zielstrich.

Wir hatten keinen konkreten Plan, wie wir den langen Anstieg des Tages angehen wollten, es hat sich einfach so ergeben, dass wir uns dort absetzen konnten. Wir wollten dort etwas Schaden anrichten, aber wir dachten nicht, dass wir wirklich alle abschütteln könnten. Aber die Dinge liefen so, wie wir es wollten, einige Teams hatten zudem noch mit Defekten zu kämpfen. Wir hatten ein bisschen Glück, aber als wir einmal vorne waren, haben wir einfach bis ins Ziel weitergemacht. Es ist ein super Gefühl, die Etappe zu gewinnen.

    Nur als Info wer was fährt in den TOP 4 (keiner von denen hatte bis jetzt Plattfüssen gehabt):

    • Buff-Megamo: Pirelli Scorpion
    • Toyota-NinetyOne-Specialized: Specialized Renegade
    • Speed Company Racing: Schwalbe Thunder Burt
    Diese Maxxis taugenichts Gravelreifen hinten haben jetzt schon wenn ich richtig zähle 5(!) verschiedene Platten bei Scott Sram und Scott Sram Due verursacht. Es wäre Zeit passende Pneus aufzuziehen.

    Manchmal ist man echt blockiert 😁 Jetzt habe ich erstmal gerätselt, wann Schurter denn zu Specialized gewechselt ist und daher jetzt auf einem Epic sitzt....
    Nun ja, irgendwann fiel auch bei mir der Groschen smilie

    Vielleicht hat Nino jetzt einfach mal etwas Pech was er die letzten 15 Jahre im Weltcup bzgl. technischer Probleme oder Plattfüße einfach nicht hatte.
    Heute hatte er ja erneut eine Panne nachdem sie ca. eine Minute dem Feld voraus waren.
