Führungswechsel an der Spitze des Herrenfeldes und neue Gesichter auf dem Podium der Damenkonkurrenz – Reifendefekte bestimmten entscheidend das Geschehen auf der dritten Etappe des Absa Cape Epic 2019. Manuel Fumic und Henrique Avancini gelang nach zwei zweiten Plätzen und einem dritten Platz erstmals der Sprung aufs oberste Podest und damit auch die Übernahme des gelben Trikots der Gesamtführenden. Das Investec-Songo-Specialized-Duo Annika Langvad/Anna van der Breggen hingegen sicherten sich auch am vierten Tag den Tagessieg in der Damenkonkurrenz und baute somit die Gesamtführung weiter aus.

Herren – Reifendefekt bei Scott-SRAM sorgt für Führungswechsel

Nach drei dominanten Tagen des Scott-SRAM-Teams um Nino Schurter und Lars Forster stand der vierte Tag des Cape Epic 2019 ganz im Zeichen der Veränderungen. Die bis zum heutigen Tag Zweitplatzierten in der Gesamtwertung Manuel Fumic und Henrique Avancini hatten sich einen Plan zurechtgelegt wie sie die Phalanx der beiden Eidgenossen durchbrechen könnten. Früh im Rennen setzten die beiden Cannondale-Fahrer die Konkurrenten unter Druck – der langgezogene Anstieg zum Groenlandberg über die ersten 35 Kilometer hinweg bot dazu die passende Möglichkeit. Eine sechs Teams umfassende Gruppe überquerte den höchsten Punkt des Tages auf über 1000 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel noch gemeinsam. Definitiv nicht mehr in dieser Gruppe dabei war Jaroslav Kulhavy und Sam Gaze. Der Neuseeländer musste nach dem Sturz vorgestern und einer erlittenen Gehirnerschütterung das Rennen aufgeben.

Das hohe Tempo des Cannondale-Duos zeigte Wirkung: „Wir wollten die Scott-SRAM-Jungs unter Druck setzen und auf den letzten Metern des Passes sahen wir, dass Lars Forster Probleme hatte“, so Fumic im Ziel. Unter Druck mache man mehr Fehler und genau dies sei dann auch bei Forster passiert, so Fumic weiter. Ob selbst verschuldet oder nicht – in der Abfahrt vom Groenlandberg erlitt schließlich Forster einen Reifendefekt. Schurter und Forster hatten vermutlich aufgrund der montierten Tire-Noodle offensichtlich große Probleme beim Versuch einen Ersatzschlauch zu montieren, sodass sie sich gezwungen sahen zunächst mit dem platten Hinterrad die Fahrt fortzusetzen. Nach einigen Minuten gelang schließlich Gert Heyns und Andri Frischknecht der Anschluss an ihre Teamkollegen, sodass die beiden Scott-SRAM-Teams ihre Laufräder tauschen konnten. Stolze 9:17 Minuten Rückstand hatten Schurter und Forster schließlich bei der folgenden Verpflegungstelle 47 Kilometer vor dem Ziel – der Kampf um jede Sekunde in der Gesamtwertung nahm nun volle Fahrt auf.

Unterdessen nutzten Henrique Avancini und Manuel Fumic die Gunst der Stunde und setzten sich in jener Abfahrt von allen anderen Konkurrenten ab. Im Fernduell zwischen Scott-SRAM und Cannondale Factory Racing gelang es den beiden Eidgenossen Schurter und Forster einige Zeit wieder wett zu machen, doch zur Verteidigung des gelben Trikots reichte es nicht. Während Fumic und Avancini souverän an der Spitze ihren Vorsprung auf die weiteren Verfolger ausbauen konnten und schließlich ihren ersten Tagessieg in diesem Jahr einfahren konnten, landeten Schurter und Forster 6:45 Minuten hinter den beiden Etappensiegern auf dem vierten Tagesrang. In der Gesamtwertung liegt nun das Cannondale-Duo 2:41 Minuten vor Scott-SRAM – Spannung ist also garantiert auf dem verbleibenden vier Etappen.

In den letzten drei Jahren gelang es Manuel Fumic und Henrique Avancini stets beim Cape Epic mindestens ein Etappenerfolg zu feiern und mindestens einmal das gelbe Trikot überzustreifen. Einzig der Gesamtsieg fehlt den beiden in ihrem Palmarès

Hinter Fumic und Avancini gelang es Simon Stiebjahn und Urs Huber vom Team Bulls auf das virtuelle Podium in der Gesamtwertung zu springen. Im Zuge der Attacke der beiden Cannondale-Fahrer konnten sich die beiden „Bullen“ ebenfalls von der verbliebenen Konkurrenz von der Verfolgergruppe lösen. Lange Zeit konnten die beiden den Rückstand auf die Spitzenreiter konstant halten, auf den fahrtechnisch anspruchsvolleren letzten Kilometern der Etappe verloren sie aber zunehmend an Boden. Viel wichtiger für Huber und Stiebjahn: Ihre ärgsten Rivalen um den Podiumsplatz in der Gesamtwertung, Samuele Porro und Damiano Ferraro, verloren nach einem Sturz von Porro ebenfalls wertvolle Zeit und waren nur bedingt in der Lage den zeitlichen Rückstand wieder aufzuholen. Schließlich sicherten sich Stiebjahn und Huber mit 2:25 Minuten Rückstand auf Fumic/Avancini den zweiten Tagesrang, Porro und Ferraro folgten 1:20 Minuten hinter den Bulls-Heroes auf Rang drei. Damit tauschten beide Teams die Plätze in der Gesamtwertung – knappe 12 Sekunden trennt die beiden Duos nun nach der Hälfte der Rennwoche.

Die Aufholjagd vom Scott-SRAM-Duo Schurter/Forster wurde immer wieder begleitet von weiteren Teams, die aber dem hohen Tempo der beiden Gesamtführenden meist nicht gewachsen waren. Einzig das Centurion-Vaude-Duett Daniel Geismayr und Jochen Käß konnte auf den finalen Kilometern den beiden Schweizern folgen und belegte schließlich wenige Sekunden hinter Schurter und Forster den fünften Tagesrang – in der Gesamtwertung verbesserten sie sich vom siebten auf den fünften Platz. Die Altmeister Karl Platt und Alban Lakata erwischten erneut nicht den besten Tag: Sie belegten den zehnten Rang im Tagesklassement, fielen in der Gesamtwertung vom achten auf den neunten Rang zurück.

Damen – Langvad/van der Breggen souverän, Kross-Spur vom Pech verfolgt

Nach drei Tagen mit der jeweils gleichen Konstellation auf dem Damen-Podest, kam es auf der dritten Etappe rund um das Weingut Oak Valley zu einer Veränderung in dieser Hinsicht. Grund dafür war, ähnlich wie bei den Herren, ein Defekt bei einem der Top-Teams. Ähnlich wie Nino Schurter und Lars Forster erwischte es Maja Wloszczowska und Ariane Lüthi in der Abfahrt nach Erreichen des höchsten Punkt des Tages. Der Wechsel erwies sich als weniger problematisch, als bei den männlichen Kollegen vom Team Scott-SRAM, doch der erneute Tausch eines Laufrades in der nächsten Verpflegungszone erwies sich als fataler Fehler. Denn die Teamkollegen Sergion Mantecon und Ondrej Cink des Kross-Spur-Duos hatten zuvor ebenfalls in derselben Abfahrt einen Defekt erlitten und das Laufrad an der Verpflegungszone gewechselt. Lüthi griff unglücklicherweise zu jenem defekten Laufrad, das zwar noch Luft in den Reifen hatte, aber im Verlauf der nächsten Kilometern diese verlor. Ein erneuter Reifenwechsel und ein großer Rückstand auf die Konkurrentinnen war die Folge dieses Malheurs. (Anmerkung: Beim Cape Epic dürfen Laufräder nur von den Fahrern selbst getauscht werden. In die Tec-Zonen werden von jedem Team lediglich die Laufräder in Taschen gestellt. Eine Hilfe eines Mechanikers ist untersagt.)

Bereits zuvor waren einmal mehr Annika Langvad und Anna van der Breggen enteilt, die dann auch den vierten Sieg in Serie feierten. In souveräner Art und Weise fuhren sie den Konkurrentinnen bereits auf dem Weg zum Groenlandberg davon und sicherten sich mit 5:52 Minuten Vorsprung den erneuten Tagessieg. Das Pech des Kross-Spur-Teams konnten sich Candice Lill und Adelheid Morath zunutze machen, die erstmals beim Cape Epic 2019 auf dem zweiten Rang landeten. Das Missgeschick von Wloszczowska und Lüthi kostete sogar so viel Zeit, dass Lill und Morath nun auch in der Gesamtwertung auf den zweiten Rang vorrückten. Dritte in der Tagesabrechnung wurden die Schwedin Jennie Stenerhag und die Südafrikanerin Mariske Strauss mit fast 20 Minuten Rückstand auf die Etappensiegerinnen. Die Pechvögel Wloszczowska und Lüthi rollten schließlich als Viertplatzierte mit fast 22 Minuten Rückstand ins Ziel.     Nino hatte ja einen Schlauch in der Hand (sah nach einem Tubolito aus), aber die haben ja den Reifen nicht von der Felge bekommen (wegen der Tire Noodle?) und sind dann auf der Felge weitergerollt bis das Backup-Team kam. Mich hat nur gewundert, wie "platt" der Reifen aussah trotz der Tire Noodle, als sie auf der Felge weitergefahren sind......
    Hab ich auch so wahrgenommen. Der Reifen sah sowas von platt aus..

    Ich bin nur etwas verwundert.
    Bei einem Ralley oder Formel-1 Auto kann man selbst fast nichts reparieren.

    Aber bei einem Fahrrad?
    Das die Rennradfahrer einen ganzen Begleittross haben, die ihnen gleich ein neues Fahrrad oder Laufräder hinstellt und sie mit diversen Flüssigkeiten versorgen, ist das eine.

    Aber ich verbinde MTB halt mehr mit der Natur uva natürlichen Untergründen. Und dementsprechend auch, wenn man eine Panne hat, man diese oft selbst beheben kann. Vor allem Reifenpannen. Dass dort, Gott sei Dank, keine Autos, SUV, Kleintransporter oder Motorräder erlaubt sind, finde ich eh gut.

    Dass man aber dann bei einer Panne auf das Ersatzteam warten kann und darf, damit diese als Ersatzteilspender herhalten smilie, finde ich sehr eigenartig smilie.
    Selbst die früheren Rennradfahrer fuhren mal mit Reifen um dem Körper...smilie
    Dann wirst du darüber noch weniger efreut sein (ich im Übrigen auch):

    Andri Frischknecht (DSV Scott-Sram) drückte für seine Teamkollegen Lars Forster und Nino Schurter aufs Tempo – ohne Rücksicht auf seinen eigenen Partner Gert Heyns. Dass das eine Zeitstrafe bedeuten würde, weil maximal zwei Minuten Unterschied erlaubt sind, das war wohl kalkuliert.

    Lars Forster erlitt nach rund 1:30 Stunden einen Hinterrad-Defekt. Er tauschte das Laufrad mit Andri Frischknecht, der sich damit aus der Spitzengruppe verabschiedete. Der Zeitverlust war verkraftbar. Ob das im Sinne des (Regel-)Erfinders ist, dass ein Fahrer seinen Kollegen zurücklässt und dann auf diese Art ins Rennen eingreift, sei dahin gestellt.

    Wo es Schlupflöcher gibt, da wird halt auch geschlüpft.. smilie

    Sonderlich gut finden tue ich es auch nicht, aber solange die Regeln es hergeben wäre ein Spitzenteam bescheuert es anders zu handhaben.

    Dann passt auch der Name „Tour de France der Mountainbiker“ noch besser smilie

    Ja, die "Tour de France der Mountainbiker" finde ich jetzt auch irgendwie unnötig. Muss sich der MTB-Sport etwa mit dem Straßensport messen oder daran orientieren? Keinesfalls, wie ich finde. Umschreibungen wie das "Weltweit anspruchsvollste MTB-Rennen" oder etwas in der Art fände ich viel angebrachter. Da können wir durchaus mit etwas mehr Selbstbewusstsein auftreten, denn das was dort in Südafrika geboten wird, hat ein unglaubliches Niveau und zumindest ich finde es viel interessanter anzuschauen, als eine Grand Tour.

    Im Vergleich zur Straße ist die Geschichte mit Back Up Teams und Materialunterstützung ja noch total unterentwickelt, was ich auch gut finde und in Kombination mit den 2er Teams dem Rennen einen völlig anderen Spin gibt. Auf der Straße gibt es Fahrer, die ein Leben lang dafür bezahlt werden, für den Kapitän im Wind zu fahren und die Trinkflaschen vom Teamauto nach vorne ins Feld zu bringen. Wenn der Kapitän stürzt bekommt er sofort das Rad vom Teamkollegen unter den Hintern geschoben, damit es weiter geht.
    Das zweite Team von Scott-SRAM ist mit der ganz klaren Aufgabe am Start, im Notfall zur Stelle zu sein und ich denke, das ist den Fahrern auch sonnenklar. BULLS fährt gar mit drei Teams und verfolgt ganz sicher ein ähnliches Konzept. Das Gleiche wird auf Specialized zutreffen, wobei deren Plan ja in diesem Jahr etwas durcheinander geraten ist. Da kann ich jetzt nichts verwerfliches dran finden und wenn dann eine Zeitstrafe mit einkalkuliert wird, um dem A-Team zu helfen, dann ist es halt so.
    Auf diese Art bleibt das Rennen zumindest an der Spitze auf jeden Fall weiter spannend, denn ohne die Unterstützung des Back Up Teams wäre Scott-SRAM ganz klar raus im Kampf um den Sieg.
