Vom scheinbar harmlosesten Tag des Cape Epic zum turbulenten Tag der Veränderungen! Die fünfte Etappe von Saronsberg ins Slankhoek Valley hatte einiges an Drama parat, das für viel Wirbel im Klassement sorgte. Tagessiegerinnen bei den Damen waren aber einmal mehr Laura Stigger und Sina Frei, bei den Herren kletterten der Portugiese José Dias und der Niederländer Hans Becking aufs oberste Podium.

Damen: Frei und Stigger lassen sich nicht beirren

Fünfter Tag, fünfter Erfolg für Laura Stigger aus Österreich und Sina Frei aus der Schweiz: Das NinetyOne-songo-Specialized-Duo konnte sich abermals souverän durchsetzen und ihren Vorsprung in der Gesamtwertung auf nun mehr als 17 Minuten ausbauen. Tagesrang zwei ging an die beiden Südafrikanerinnen Marisek Strauss und Candice Lill, die sich nach dem Sturzpech von Strauss am Tag zuvor revanchieren konnten und zum zweiten Mal nach dem Auftaktprolog auf der zweiten Position ins Ziel kamen. Jenes Sturzpech ereilte jedoch am heutigen Tag Ariane Lüthi, die heftig zu Boden ging und gemeinsam mit ihrer Teampartnerin Robyn de Groot auf Tagesrang drei viel Boden im Kampf um den Gesamtsieg verlor.

Nachdem die beiden Dominatorinnen des bisherigen Rennverlaufs der Damen beim Cape Epic, Laura Stigger und Sina Frei, in den vergangenen Tagen stets mit aktiven Tempoverschärfungen in der zweiten Etappenhälfte der Konkurrenz enteilen konnten, reichte auf der heutigen vierten Etappe eine eher passive Fahrweise, um erneut den Sieg davonzutragen. Während die Kontrahentinnen durch Schwächen und Stürze sich selbst um die Chance auf den Sieg brachten, blieben Stigger und Frei erneut fehlerlos und stürmten letztlich ungefährdet zum Sieg.

Zu Beginn der Etappe bildete sich zunächst eine drei Teams umfassende Spitzengruppe, die neben den beiden späteren Tagessiegerinnen Frei und Stigger das deutsch-südafrikanische Duo Adelheid Morath/Cherie Redecker und das Salusmed-Team um Ariana Lüthi und Robyn de Groot beinhaltete. Nach einem verhaltenen Start gelang es schließlich auch den Drittplatzierten der Gesamtwertung, Candice Lill und Mariske Strauss, den Anschluss an die Spitze herzustellen.

Während Morath und Redecker im Verlauf der Etappe physisch nicht mit den beiden Spitzenteams mithalten konnte, sorgte der bereits erwähnte Sturz bei Ariane Lüthi für eine Vorentscheidung im Kampf um den Tagessieg. Laura Stigger und Sina Frei zogen auf und davon, Lill und Strauss konnten nur mit Abstand folgen und Ariane Lüthi und Robyn de Groot hatten mit den Folgen des Sturzes zu kämpfen. Konstant bauten Frei und Stigger ihren Vorsprung von da an aus und jubelten letztlich souverän zum fünften Mal in Folge über den Tageserfolg, Lill/Strauss und de Groot/Lüthi folgten in dieser Reihenfolge mit erheblichem Abstand von 4:09 Minuten beziehungsweise 6:08 Minuten.

Herren: Magenprobleme werfen das Klassement durcheinander

Wer beim Cape Epic erfolgreich sein will, muss acht Tage hintereinander möglichst gesund und defektfrei durchkommen können. Bei keinem anderen Mountainbikerennen dieser Welt sind die äußeren Faktoren so mitentscheidend wie bei der „Tour de France der Mountainbiker“, was auf der heutigen vierten Etappe die beiden top-gesetzten Teams Canyon Northwave und Bulls am eigenen Leib erfahren mussten.

Bereits vor dem Start der vierten Etappe über 73 Kilometer musste der Marathon-Weltmeister den Startverzicht seines Teampartners Martin Stosek vermelden: Am Tag zuvor noch gefeierter Etappensieger, musste Stosek sich in der Nacht mehrfach übergeben und klagte am Morgen über heftige Magenbeschwerden. Ein Start zur vierten Etappe war nicht möglich, sodass Andreas Seewald als sogenannter „Outcast-Rider“ außerhalb der Wertung auf die 74 Kilometer ins Slanghoek Tal gehen musste.

Und auch das deutsche Team Bulls blieb von Magenproblemen nicht verschont: Nachdem Altmeister Karl Platt bereits tags zuvor das Cape Epic aufgrund von Beschwerden im Magenbereich aufgeben musste, traf es nun Simon Schneller, der sich in der Nacht nach eigenen Worten „komplett entleerte“. Schneller wagte dennoch den Start, musste aber früh einsehen, dass die Hoffnungen auf ein gutes Resultat und damit auch die Chancen auf einen Platz auf dem Gesamtpodium dahinschwinden würden. Mit mehr als 20 Minuten Rückstand schleppte er sich schließlich unter der Hilfe seines Teampartners Urs Huber ins Ziel und hofft auf eine schnelle Genesung für die verbleibenden drei Renntage.

Durch die üble Nacht hatte ich bereits am Start recht wenig Energie, die ich dann während der Etappe noch weiter verloren habe. Kurz zusammengefasst: Quasi schwach angefangen und stark nachgelassen heute. Vielleicht geht’s morgen wieder besser!

Simon Schneller

Ungeachtet dessen lieferten sich die verbliebenen Top-Teams auf der scheinbar einfachsten Etappe des Cape Epic 2021 einen heftigen Schlagabtausch, der sich auch in der Gesamtwertung auswirkte. Wie bereits am Tag zuvor versuchten zunächst die beiden Südafrikaner Philipp Buys und Pieter du Toit ihr Glück mit einem Ausreißversuch, der sich jedoch nur bedingt auszahlte. Das Feld der Herren zerfiel in viele Teile, was letztlich für die späteren Tagessieger José Dias und Hans Becking die Möglichkeit eröffnete an der Spitze davonzuziehen. Einzig die Teams Bulls 2 (Martin Frey/Simon Stiebjahn), NinetyOne-songo-Specialized (Jordan Sarrou/Matthew Beers) und Trek-Pirelli(Samuele Porro/Fabian Rabensteiner) blieben zunächst in Reichweite, schafften es aber letztlich nicht, das portugiesisch/niederländische Duo einzuholen. Sarrou und Beers konnten als einziges Team letztlich den Rückstand limitieren und blieben bis zuletzt nur knapp eine Minute hinter dem späteren Siegerteam.

Becking und Dias sicherten sich somit letztlich mit 43 Sekunden Vorsprung den Tagessieg und sorgten damit für das vierte unterschiedliche Paar auf dem obersten Treppchen beim Cape Epic 2021 am fünften Tag. Auf Rang drei rollten schließlich Martin Frey und Simon Stiebjahn mit einem Rückstand von 1:50 Minuten ins Ziel, die damit nach dem Ausfall von Martin Stosek und Andreas Seewald in der Gesamtwertung auf Position zwei vorrücken konnten.

    Bulls hatte auf jeden Fall immer einen eigenen Koch, wobei ich es für dieses Jahr nicht genau sagen kann. Es kann auch das Handling der Flaschen an der Verpflegung sein, die genannten Flussdurchfahrten, Das Wasser mit dem die Teller und Flaschen gepült werden, etc.

    Weiß jemand was es genau bedeutet das Andi Seewald als "Outcast" Fahrer weiter mit fährt ?
    Im Reglement find ich nur was er als solcher darf und was nicht,aber nicht was es wirklich bedeutet

    Wäre interessant zu verstehen. Alban Lakata macht das ja auch nachdem Karl Platt ausgefallen ist.

    Hut ab, da sind viele mit dem Rennrad langsamer 👍🏻
    bei den ganzen Magenbeschwerden sollte man sich aber vielleicht mal fragen, ob es wirklich „nur“ die Anstrengung ist, oder ob Dinge im Kochtopf landen, die gerade wir Mitteleuropäer einfach nicht vertragen.

    Weiss jemand, ob die Top-Teams mit allen anderen essen, oder haben die ihre eigene Verpflegung dabei?
